The Single Most Important Tool to Have in a Survival Situation
So, remember the “being prepared” motto makes more sense and shouldn’t be just a slogan. Having the know-how will only get you so far and, even though possessing the secrets to survival is crucial, these skills also need to be practiced.
What is the single most important tool to have in a survival situation?
- Waterproof matches/A fire starter
- Your brain
- A good multi-tool or knife
- GPS/compass/map
- Flashlight
- Cellphone
- Water purifier/water filter
Okay, if you said any of these things, consider yourself one of the few survival savvy experts on the Internet. While all of these items should be on your list of emergency survival tools, for this particular exercise you can only have one. So, what then is the single most important tool to have in a survival situation? As you can see by this list generated from the Internet, many people have many different opinions on this subject. However, as much as I would like to agree with the mantra that having your brain with you in a survival situation would be the best-case scenario, it is just plain silly to think you would be able to survive at all without it. Yes, it is imperative that you have your brain with you at all times and that it is working.

But - remember too that the, “being prepared,” motto makes a lot more sense and shouldn’t just be lip service. Having the know-how will only get you so far and, even though possessing the secrets to survival is crucial, these learnable skills also need to be practiced! Therefore, get out on the weekends (or any other time) and practice your survival skills until they become second nature. In my opinion, this is time well spent and you will quickly learn what the single most important tool to have in a survival situation is. If you can talk the talk, you should be able to walk the walk, right?. This is true for a number of reasons but, to be able to understand and process the need for and how to use the equipment you do have, will be a good start. Also, unless you are one of those rare living brain donors, almost everyone will have their brains with them when the SHTF.

This is where the knowledge and training will come into play and being prepared will enable you to realize that the most valuable tool; the most important survival tool you can have is a good quality, very versatile, and multi-purpose cutting implement. In other words, a good knife is something you can have with you at all times and will be invaluable in an emergency situation because with it you can create many of the other implements or tools on this list. How many times have you said, “I’ll just use my weatherproof match to cut this sapling down or my GPS to build a shelter”? Probably not many. Don’t get me wrong, having your cell phone and a reliable GPS/compass will be handy, although the compass will be more useful than the others if there is a global power outage and GPS satellites are rendered useless. On the other hand, having a good quality survival knife with you at this time will be the best investment you’ll ever make.

There are also other options of a “survival knife” than that made popular by Sylvester Stallone in his Rambo movies but these knives remain popular even today. I mean, really, how convenient is it to be able to store your other survival gear, like waterproof matches, fish hooks and fishing line, in the hollow butt of your knife, right? Today’s survival knives however, come in many different shapes and sizes and I would recommend carrying one that is light, compact, and still able to stow other important components of survival.

Some of the things you can do with a knife in a survival situation are:
o Attached to long stick for spearing fish or other game
o Use as self-defense weapon
o Drilling holes in wood for attachment points
o Cutting notches on branches for shelter assembly
o Making feather sticks for starting fires
o Creating fire-starting implements such as a “Bow and Drill”
o Cleaning harvested game
As can be seen, a good quality knife, either folding or fixed blade, can be used quite effectively in a survival situation and it is the single most important tool to have in a survival situation. In my next post I’ll go over the components of what makes a knife “good quality” and how to pick one for carry and survival.
